Persija Jakarta Calls Off Friendly with Atletico Madrid Due to Piala Presiden 2024 Engagement

For the 2024/2025 season, each club in BRI Liga 1 is allowed to contract up to eight foreign players with no restrictions on their countries of origin. Persebaya Surabaya has signed Darryl Lachman as their seventh foreign player for the season. Initially, Persebaya planned to use only six foreign players, but recent developments led them to recruit Darryl Lachman. Lachman, a 34-year-old central defender, played for Perth Glory in the 2023/2024 season, featuring in 23 matches. He has also played for several Dutch clubs including FC Groningen, PEC Zwolle, FC Twente, Cambuur, and Willem II. PSBS Biak has made a new foreign signing as well, bringing in Jaimerson Xavier, who played for Persis Solo in the previous season. The reason for Persija Jakarta’s cancellation of the friendly match against Atletico Madrid is their participation in the 2024 President’s Cup. Rumors had circulated that Persija was scheduled to play Atletico Madrid on Saturday (August 3) at Jakarta International Stadium (JIS) in preparation for the new season. Persija qualified for the semifinal stage of the 2024 President’s Cup and was set to play against Persis Solo for third place on the same day at Stadion Manahan, Solo. “It was impossible because we were in the third-place match of the 2024 President’s Cup, right?” said Persija’s Director, Mohamad Prapanca, to reporters. He added that Atletico Madrid could only visit on that specific date, which conflicted with Persija’s schedule. “We were ready to host them, but we had to adhere to the regulations set by our federation,” Prapanca continued. Prapanca is unsure if Atletico Madrid will still visit Indonesia after the friendly was canceled. He mentioned that Persija initially planned to test their strength against the Spanish giants. “I’m not sure. You should inquire with the promoter about Atletico Madrid’s visit. Regarding the planning, yes, the plan was made,” Prapanca added. “But the promoter also needs to get approval from our federation and PT LIB to see if it could be arranged during the 2024 President’s Cup,” he concluded.

As a newly promoted team, Malut United has undergone a major squad overhaul to compete in BRI Liga 1 2024/2025. Malut United made some intriguing moves in the transfer market. Rising star Yakob Sayuri, who was previously with PSM Makassar, was signed after his contract ended. Alongside Yakob Sayuri, Yance Sayuri was also recruited by Malut United. The Sayuri brothers have consistently played for the same club. In addition to local players, Malut United has revamped its foreign player roster. New foreign recruits include Adriano Castanheira, Diego Martinez, and Cassio Scheid, all of whom are new to Indonesian football. Unlike the players, Malut United has retained two crucial figures in the coaching staff. Imran Nahumarury (head coach) and Resal Octavian (assistant coach) remain for the 2024/2025 season. However, the coaching team has seen some interesting additions. Former players Dedy Gusmawan, Aditya Putra Dewa, and Joko Ribowo will begin their debut season as coaches. These three were instrumental in helping Malut United earn promotion from Liga 2 to BRI Liga 1 last season.

Most BRI Liga 1 teams have unveiled their home kits for the 2024/2025 season. The 2024/2025 BRI Liga 1 season will kick off on Friday (August 9, 2024). Defending champions Persib Bandung will host newly promoted PSBS Biak in the opening match of Week 1 at Stadion Si Jalak Harupat. Persib is determined to hit the ground running as they strive to defend their championship. Teams such as Persija Jakarta and Persebaya Surabaya are also highly motivated to secure the championship. Clubs have geared up with their home kits for the season, with some teams having already unveiled them while others are still keeping their designs confidential.
